Background
The two Legion of Mary shows on April 9, 1975 have been the source of some confusion over the years. In the quest to try and figure out the correct setlist for this show, I’ve managed to track down 3 separate copies of this show. After examining each of them I came up with the setlists listed below. In no way do I claim them to be the 100% accurate, they merely represent my best guess given all the research I’ve done.

Tapes
I’ve acquired 3 separate copies of this show, all SBDs. They are:

  1. Master SBD Reel > 1st gen reel > PCM > DAT (44kHz)
  2. Master SBD Reel > 1st gen reel > DAT (48kHz +emphasis)
  3. Master SBD Reel > 2 cassette gens > DAT (48kHz)
Master SBD Reel (2-track Nagra SL11183 at 7.5 ips on 7" Scotch 206 reels) > 1st gen Reel (2-track Otari MX5050 at 15 ips on 7" reels)

Tapes #1 and #2 descend from the Marin Flea Market batch of Betty Cantor reels. These are reels that “fell out” from the infamous Betty locker auction that happened in 1985. 1st gen 15ips copies were made from the master 7.5ips reels and every tape I’ve seen descends from these first gen reels. I believe Jeff Silberman and other long-time traders were very instrumental in getting copies of this show widely circulated.

Tape #3 comes from the early/mid ‘80s and appears to be from a completely different path than tapes #1 and #2. This is the tape that I’ve used for the my setlists.

Explaination
So why is tape #3 correct and the other two more widely circulated tapes incorrect? Here’s my reasoning:
  1. From a show length perspective, it makes more sense. 90min (Early) and 72min (Late) are reasonable length shows for this period. Conversely, the previous 140min listing for the late show is 35min longer than any other Early or Late show from this tour.
  2. It’s not so much that the previous 4/9/75b listing is incorrect, it’s just that it contained both the shows under the heading of the Late show. Tape #3 separates them into what I believe were the correct divisions.
Reel Theory
So how did tapes #1 and #2 end up with songs in the incorrect order? Well, I’ve established a theory (scary isn’t it!) about this. It’s the only way I can really explain it, but it does make sense (atleast to me).

The shows were made up of 5 x 7" reels worth of music. Assuming tape #3 has the correct setlists, the reels went:

- Reel #1 (37min): Beginning of Early Show -
Think
Freedom Jazz Dance
I Feel Like Dynamite

- Reel #2 (41min): Middle of Early Show -
That's What Love Will Make You Do
Mississippi Moon
Harder They Come

- Reel #3 (13min): End of Early Show -
Talkin' 'Bout You

Total Early Show: 91min

- Reel #4 (44min): Beginning of Late Show -
I Second That Emotion
You Can Leave Your Hat On
Last Train From Poor Valley

- Reel #5 (28min): End of Late Show -
I'll Take A Melody
Mystery Train

Total Late Show: 72min

All of the splices for the reel changes are evident on each copy of this show. What I believe happened was that when transferring the masters, somehow master reels #3 and #4 got reversed. So the order of the master reels on the first gen reels went 1,2,4,3,5. This results in the following setlist:

Think
Freedom Jazz Dance
I Feel Like Dynamite

That's What Love Will Make You Do
Mississippi Moon
Harder They Come

I Second That Emotion
You Can Leave Your Hat On
Last Train From Poor Valley

Talkin' 'Bout You

I'll Take A Melody
Mystery Train

Low and behold this is the exact tape everyone has labeled as 4-9-75b, except Reel #5 (Melody and Mystery Train) was mistakenly labeled as filler from 4/10b (or sometimes 4/8).

I’m certainly not saying this correct, it’s just the best guess at an explanation of what might have happened. Hopefully now you have way more information about this show than you ever wanted!
